DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -- DeKalb County Police said they have arrested a man and charged him in connection with the savage attack of a dog that was found beaten in Murphy Candler Park.
Police said Joseph Waters, 48, was arrested and charged with the savage attack on the dog.
Tuesday morning, Robert Kennedy was walking with his dog in Murphy Candler Park when he made the discovery of a dog that had been severely beaten with a sledge hammer, but was still alive.
The dog was described as a shepherd mix ranging from 3-to-5-years old, brown and black in color. The dog is listed in critical condition at a local vet clinic after having been struck in the head. According to police the sledge hammer used to strike the dog was left at the scene.
The dog was in "critical condition" Wednesday morning, police said.
Kennedy said he named the dog "Murphy" since it was found in Murphy-Candler Park. Kennedy says he is working with Wachovia Bank to establish a fund to pay for the dog's medical treatments.
